Contractual employees of Central govt to be paid like permanent staff

Nearly 10 lakh contractual employees working in various departments of the central government will be now paid like their permanent counterparts, according to a report.

A report of Amar Ujala revealed that Department of Personnel and Training yesterday (September 12) issued an order to all departments pertaining to this.

As per the order, all contractual or temporary Central government employees who are working for eight hours in day will now be to get minimum basic salary as well as dearness allowance just like a permanent staffs in the same position.

Though, this does not imply that the contractual employees will be regularised, they will only get paid for the number of days they have worked.

The development took place three years after the Supreme Court of India ruled that contractual staffs are entitled to wages at par with permanent employees.

"Any one, who is compelled to work at a lesser wage, does not do so voluntarily. He does so, to provide food and shelter to his family, at the cost of his self-respect and dignity, at the cost of his self-worth, and at the cost of his integrity. For he knows, that his dependents would suffer immensely, if he does not accept the lesser wage," the apex court had stated in 2016.
